Student Activities

The science fair, sponsored by the SCA,  will be held on March 1, 2023. Students in kindergarten through 5th grade are allowed to participate.  Top finishers from different grade bands then move forward to the district elementary science fair a few weeks later, competing against students in the other three elementary schools.

5th graders have the opportunity to participate in TREP$, short for enTREPreneur$, a project-based learning program that teaches students how to start their own businesses. Students learn the lessons as part of an afterschool program and apply them at home as they build their businesses with the support of their families. The whole school community comes out to enjoy the TREP$ Marketplace, held right at the school, where the young entrepreneurs launch their businesses together. 

Safety Patrol is comprised of 5th grade students who display leadership ability, good citizenship and a positive attitude.  Safety Patrol members help during our dismissal procedures to keep the hallways orderly and to assist younger students as they navigate finding buses. As the school year begins, 5th grade teachers will inform students of the requirements and steps to take to become a part of this group of helpful students!

Our schools are looking for dedicated, kind leaders who are passionate about spreading kindness, helping others and setting a positive example within their school community. As Kindness Ambassadors, students are expected to serve as positive role models and to assist with various school wide projects throughout the year. Students selected as Kindness Ambassadors are traditionally nominated by a teacher and are required to complete an application. Being selected to become a Kindness Ambassador is an honor and a big responsibility. The mission of the team is to bring students together to help create an environment where everyone feels welcome and included. Members of the club are committed to making our school, community, ourselves and our world a better place, one act of kindness at a time!

Kindness Ambassadors will work on the following:
 - Promoting a sense of kindness at home, school and in our community
 - Creating ways to acknowledge students and staff for random acts of kindness
 - Inspiring others to be positive role models and be upstanders
 - Participating in activities that will focus on spreading kindness

Selection:
 - Fifth grade representatives
 - Applications, sent out in the fall of the 5th Grade year 

Qualifications to apply to become a Kindness Ambassador:
 - A student who would like to be a Kindness Ambassador must demonstrate:
 - Leadership ability (participate in class, communicate effectively and be creative)
 - Good citizenship and positive relationships with others
 - Positive attitude
 - A strong work ethic (completes class work and homework assignments)

*Any students behavior contradictory to club expectations can result in the removal from the club.*

L.E.A.D is a program that occurs throughout the year during which 5th grade classes are visited and led in lessons by our own Mount Olive Police Officers!  L.E.A.D officers provide fun interactive lessons that focus on good decision making, effective communication and goal setting. 

The Gifted and Talented Art Program at CMS is a before-school morning program which allows artistically talented 4th & 5th grade students the opportunity to participate in additional art instruction once a week.  During this time, the focus is upon enhancing each child's artistic abilities, nurturing and developing their creativity and engaging in a variety of artistic mediums.  Students work in both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional applications.  Opportunities are given to explore famous artists and art history, and the elements and principles of art and design. 

The program is designed for students in 4th & 5th grade who exhibit artistic, creative talent with a consistently high degree of self-motivation.  Students are nominated by their parents/guardians, art teacher or other teachers.  Nominees are given a drawing test on a determined testing date.  The process is extremely competitive and a panel of art educators evaluate the tests on a grade-level basis.  Parents/Guardians are notified of their child's test results.  

The Gifted & Talented Art Program provides unique opportunities for artistic expression and the development of creative and critical thinking.  The goal of the program is to provide a variety of interesting and sequential developmental experiences leading to advanced artwork at the next level.
